Originally founded in 1834 by Germanicus Kent, the city of Rockford has grown
to be the third largest city in Illinois. Rockford is located approximately
77 mi (124 km) northwest of Chicago and 78 mi (125 km) southwest of Milwaukee,
providing easy access to major highways and rail services. The city’s interaction
with and preservation of its natural environments has created many opportunities
for visitors, including exploring the city's river, gardens and forests at Anderson
Gardens, Davis Park, Downtown Rockford, Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden and
the Severson Dells Environmental Education Center. Other Rockford attractions
include a 39-foot-tall Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton at the Burpee Museum of Natural
History, over 180 hands-on exhibits at the Discovery Center Museum, 20th-century
art exhibits at the Rockford Art Museum and Wild West Days at the Midway Village
